The Beginning
I thought I would share some small stories behind Common Thread — little moments and thoughts from the long journey of making this book.
The beginning goes back almost two years.
A few weeks before I moved to France, I received my first message from amirisu about the possibility of doing something together. In that very first email, they also asked if we could meet. The day they suggested was just two days before I was due to leave Japan.
By then, almost everything had been packed, and my apartment in Tokyo was completely empty. I left that empty room to go and meet them.
I remember having a feeling that, if something could begin at such a strangely perfect moment, perhaps everything would work out.
At home in Tokyo, on the day I left
For the first six months after moving to France, I couldn’t begin working on the book. I was busy with the process of getting my official residence permit — which took six months! — while also trying to build a new life from the ground up.
Once my residence permit finally came through, things began to settle into place. Thankfully, my husband’s work was also officially confirmed around the same time, and little by little, we were able to establish a more secure foundation for our life in France.
In the meantime, our conversations with amirisu continued. Little by little, as we exchanged ideas, the image of the book began to take shape in my mind.
About a year and a half ago, I finally sent them a first draft.
What still amazes me is that the ideas, designs, and thoughts in that very first draft have come into the world almost exactly as I imagined them then — and are now becoming the book you will soon be able to hold in your hands.
What made this possible was the trust and care of everyone at amirisu who has been involved along the way. They believed in my ideas from the very beginning and gave me the freedom to follow them wherever they led. At the same time, they worked closely with me, and together we slowly shaped those ideas into the book it is becoming today.
I learned so much from them.
Looking back, I realise that the book had already begun long before I cast on the first stitch.

本ができるまでの小さな話、01
はじまり
『Common Thread』という本が生まれるまでの長い旅路の中で生まれた、ささやかなエピソードや想いを少しずつお話ししていこうと思います。
始まりは、遡ることおおよそ2年前のことです。
フランスへ移住するすこし前、amirisuから「何か一緒に取り組めないか」という最初のメッセージをいただきました。その最初のメールで、彼女たちは「お会いしましょう」とも提案してくれたのです。
それとは知らず提案されたその日は、私が日本を離れるわずか2日前でした。
その頃には荷造りもほぼ終わり、東京の部屋はすっかり空っぽになっていました。私はその何もない部屋から彼女たちに会いに出かけました。
こんなにも絶妙なタイミングで何かが動き出すのなら、それはきっとすべてうまくに違いない―そんな予感を感じたことを覚えています。
東京の部屋で、旅立ちの日
フランスに移住してからの最初の6ヶ月間は、本の制作に取り掛かることができませんでした。正式な滞在許可証を取得する手続き（なんと6ヶ月もかかりました！）に追われながら、ゼロから新しい生活を築こうとしていたからです。
ようやく滞在許可証が下りると、物事が少しずつ落ち着き始めました。幸運なことに、同じ頃に夫の仕事も正式に決まり、私たちはフランスでの生活の基盤を少しずつ固めていくことができました。
その間も、amirisuとのやり取りは続いていました。アイデアを交わす中で、本のイメージが少しずつ私の頭の中で形になっていきました。
そして約1年半前、ついに最初の草案をamirisuに送りました。
今でも驚かされるのは、その最初の草案にあったアイデアやデザイン、想いが、当時思い描いていた通りの形で世に出ることになったという点です。それらは今、皆さんがもうすぐ手に取ることのできる一冊の本になろうとしています。
それを可能にしたのは、制作を共にしたamirisuの皆さんの信頼と温かいサポートでした。彼女たちは最初から私のアイデアを信じ、そのアイデアが向かう先へ自由に突き進めるようにしてくれました。
同時に、彼女たちは私と密に連携し、時間をかけてそのアイデアを現在の形へと練り上げたのです。私は彼女たちから大きな学びを得ました。
振り返ってみると、この本作りは、私が最初の編み目の「作り目（キャストオン）」をするよりもずっと前から始まっていたのだと気づかされます。
