Behind Common Thread 02 — Why 12?
Twelve pieces.
For me, the answer was quite simple: twelve months of everyday life.
The changes between seasons can be so subtle that we hardly notice them. And yet, as we move through our days, we sense them — the light changes, the air changes, and the colours around us slowly shift.
And somehow, without even thinking about it, we begin to reach for different layers, different textures, and new colours.
I wanted Common Thread to reflect that quiet passage of time, and the rhythm of the seasons woven into our everyday lives.
Twelve months, twelve designs.
I imagined each piece in relation to its particular month — its light and air, its colours, and the way we might dress and live at that time of year.
But I did not simply want to create twelve separate designs, one for each month.
What mattered to me was the knitwear that exists within the rhythm of everyday life as we move through the seasons.
Knitwear is not something reserved for special occasions. It is something we naturally reach for in the midst of ordinary days — putting on a favourite piece to go out, wearing it at home, meeting someone, or simply moving through an unremarkable day.
A knitted piece quietly becomes part of these small moments that make up our lives.
And knitting itself is also deeply connected to time.
As we work through a piece, one stitch at a time, the seasons may change around us. By the time it is finished, we may already be somewhere slightly different from where we began.
I wanted to leave a little of that sense of time within this book, too.
That is the small, quiet feeling I wanted to hold onto throughout Common Thread.
I wanted to see knitwear not as something added to our lives, but as something quietly woven into them.

12の作品の訳
私にとって、その訳はとてもシンプルなものでした。それは、日々の暮らしの中にある「12ヶ月」という時間です。
季節の移ろいは、時にとても繊細で、意識しなければ気づかないほどささやかなものです。それでも、日々の生活を送る中で、私たちはそれを確かに感じ取っています。光の変化、空気の感触、そして周囲の色合いがゆっくりと変わっていく様子を。
そして、いつの間にか、無意識のうちに、私たちはこれまでとは違う重ね着や、異なる質感、新しい色を求めるようになります。
私は『Common Thread』を通して、そうした静かな時間の流れや、日々の暮らしに織り込まれた季節のリズムを感じたいと考えました。
12ヶ月、そして12のデザイン。
それぞれの作品について、その季節特有の光や空気、色合い、そしてその時期ならではの装いや暮らしのあり方を思い描きながら制作しました。
けれど単に月ごとに一つずつ独立したデザインを作りたかったわけではありません。
私にとって何よりも大切だったのは、季節を巡る日々のリズムの中に、自然に溶け込むニットウェアであるということでした。
ニットウェアは、特別な機会だけのためにあるものではありません。それは、ありふれた日々のなかで私たちが自然と手に取るものです―外出の際に気に入った一枚を纏ったり、家でくつろいだり、誰かと会ったり、あるいはただ何気ない一日を過ごしたりする時に。
編み上がったニットは、私たちの人生を形作るささやかな瞬間の中に静かに溶け込んでいくのです。
そして、編み物という行為そのものもまた、時間と深く結びついています。
一目、また一目と編み進めるうちに、周囲の季節は少しずつ移り変わっていき、完成する頃には私たちも編み始めた時とは少し違った場所に立っているのです。
この本の中にも、そうした時間の気配や感覚を少しだけ残しておきたいと思いました。
この本を通して大切にしたかったのは、そんな感覚の機微です。
ニットウェアを単に生活に「付け加える」ものではなく、日々の暮らしの中に静かに「編み込まれていく」ものとして捉えたいと考えたのです。
