Behind Common Thread 03 — Top-Down, Ten sizes
Ten sizes. Every pattern worked top-down.
These were two things I knew I wanted throughout Common Thread.
But there was a reason behind them.
Above all, I wanted these designs to leave room for as many people as possible to enjoy them in their own way — not only in terms of body size, but also in how each person likes their clothes to fit.
Some of us love an oversized, relaxed silhouette, while others prefer something more compact.
Working top-down makes that kind of freedom much easier. You can adjust the length as you go. For this reason, I deliberately chose relatively simple techniques and constructions when designing the patterns, leaving room for each knitter to make the pieces their own.
But my love of top-down knitting goes back much further than that.
Before I began designing knitwear, I ran a wedding dress atelier, where I worked across the entire process — from design and patternmaking to sewing.
I was used to creating garments from flat patterns: drawing each piece, cutting the fabric, and then joining those pieces together with a sewing machine to create a three-dimensional garment.
Knitting felt almost magical to me.
A knitted garment is first imagined three-dimensionally in your mind — through sketches, calculations, and the process of designing. Then the idea is translated into words, and as you knit, it slowly begins to take shape in your hands.
One stitch at a time, it gradually rises into a three-dimensional form — not suddenly, but from the very first stitch.
I remember being genuinely fascinated by the joy of working a garment from the top down when I first discovered knitting.
And it is still one of the things I love most about knitting today.
The joy of knitting, and the pleasure of wearing what you have made — these are the feelings I wanted to keep at the heart of the designs in Common Thread.

『Common Thread』の背景 03 — トップダウン、10サイズ
全てのパターンを10サイズ展開し、トップダウン（上から下に編んでいく手法）で編む。
これらは、『Common Thread』を制作するにあたり、私が当初から決めていたことでした。
そこには、ある理由があります。
できるだけ多くの人がそれぞれのスタイルで楽しめる余地をこれらのデザインに残したかったのです。それは単に体型のサイズという意味だけでなく、好みのフィット感についても同様で、それは人それぞれだからです。ゆったりとしたオーバーサイズのシルエットを好む人もいれば、コンパクトなサイズ感を好む人もいます。
トップダウンという方式なら、そうした自由度を確保しやすくなります。編み進めながら試着をし、好みの丈に調整したりすることが可能です。また、パターン制作においてシンプルな技法や構造を選ぶことで、編む人が自分好みの作品に仕上げられるような余白を残すようにしました。
しかし、私がトップダウンの編み物に惹かれる理由は、それだけではありません。
ニットのデザインを始める前、私はウェディングドレスのアトリエを運営しており、デザインや型紙作りから縫製に至るまで、すべての工程に携わっていました。
それまでは、平面の型紙から服を作ることに慣れ親しみ、各パーツを描き、布を裁断し、ミシンでそれらを接ぎ合わせて立体的な服に仕立てていました。
一方、編み物は私にとって、まるで魔法のように感じられました。
編み物の服は、まず頭の中で立体的にイメージされます―スケッチや計算、そしてデザインというプロセスを通じて、アイデアや数字は言葉に落とし込まれ、編んでいくにつれて、手の中でゆっくりと形を成し始めます。
一目ずつ編むごとに、ゆっくりと立体的なフォルムが立ち上がっていく。最初のひと目からすでにそのプロセスは始まっているのです。
編み物と出会った当初、私はそのトップダウンという仕組みに心から魅了されたことを覚えています。
そして今でも、編み物で最も好きな点の一つがそこなのです。
編むことの喜び、そして自分で編んだものを身にまとう楽しみ。その感情を、『Common Thread』のデザインの根底に据えたかったのです。
