Behind Common Thread 05 — One and a Half Years

For a year and a half, Common Thread was always there in my mind, quietly taking up a large part of my life.

I designed all twelve pieces and wrote all of the patterns myself. I also knitted seven of the samples for the book.

At the same time, I continued working on my regular pattern releases.

For much of that time, my days were divided between the two. I worked on the book during the day, and in the evenings I knitted my own new patterns.

I put most other things aside for the time being.

I think I am quite comfortable with this kind of deep concentration. My previous work had taught me how to give myself completely to a project, so it was not an especially stressful time for me.

But there was always a certain tension.

There were pieces I knitted more than once, and patterns I rewrote again and again. There are still piles of swatches from that time — including a rather large collection of ones that never made it into the book.

And yet, I don’t feel that any of that was wasted.

Every time I started again, changed something, or tried another possibility, I was learning. Looking back, I feel that all of those hours became part of my new strength as a designer.

And then, one day, it was all finished.

I remember one of the smallest things feeling strangely wonderful:

I could simply have an evening with nothing I needed to do.

I could read a book.

The first book I picked up was Wind, Sand and StarsTerre des hommes, a book I had read before.

After a year and a half of making my first book, and finally leaving that long period of quiet tension behind, I read it again. I was deeply moved, and felt its words resonate with me in a way they hadn’t before.

Perhaps that was when I finally realised that the long, concentrated chapter of making Common Thread had come to an end.

More to come.

『Common Thread』
